2003 GOVERNOR’S COUNCIL AWARDS PROGRAM WINNERS:

The recipients, announced on April 1 at an awards ceremony before the Phoenix Suns-Denver Nuggets game at America West Arena, are:
 
Adapted Sports and Recreation: Mesa Association of Sports for the Disabled, a nonprofit organization that provides sports and recreation opportunities to individuals with disabilities across Arizona.
 
Community Leadership: Dr. Kent Campbell, Director of the Arizona Health Education Center at the University of Arizona, and chair of the Healthy Arizona 2010 Initiative program working to reduce the impact of chronic disease in Arizona.
 
Distinguished Service: Irene Stillwell of Phoenix, a longtime member of the Governor's Council, founder and executive director of the Arizona Senior Olympics, and a 25-year employee with the City of Phoenix.
 
Employee Wellness: Arizona Healthways, the state's employee wellness program serving 45,000 employees and dependents across Arizona; and Veronica Costa of the City of Phoenix Personnel Wellness Program which promotes physical fitness and wellness activities for city employees.
 
Government Agency: Arizona Department of Health Services for its overall Leadership for a Healthy Arizona program including support for state fitness and wellness programs; and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base Health and Wellness Center, which provides health, nutrition and fitness programs for both base personnel and the Tucson community.
 
Media: Arizona Nutrition Network, a state publication promoting health, physical fitness and nutrition to Arizonans with special emphasis on children, parents and low income households.
 
Native American Community Health Leadership: Ak-Chin Indian Community for its implementation of a health and fitness program last year focusing on the prevention and treatment of diabetes. Studies have indicated that 50% of adult American Indians eventually are diagnosed with the disease.
 
Outstanding Leadership: Carol Vack, Arizona Department of Health Services, who as Manager for the state's Preventive Health Block Grant program has supported and overseen health, fitness and nutritional wellness programs across the state.
 
Physical Education: Curt Jablin, a Scottsdale physical education instructor and former Southwest PE Teacher of the Year who works with schools and community organizations to promote health and physical fitness by implementing in-line roller skating programs.
 
Professional Preparation: Warren Anderson of Rehab Plus in Phoenix, a sports performance and injury rehabilitation center for amateur and professional athletes; and Lanna Lou Leonard of the Chandler Fire Department for her efforts in establishing fitness training programs and exercise facilities for the city's firefighters.
 
Seniors: Jim and Jerry Sullivan, ages 79 and 74 of Green Valley. After successfully battling cancer, both began running 5K races in the early 1980s and have participated in a variety of marathons across the United States and internationally.
